Birmingham's Southside District is gearing up for a sizzling summer of fun, with a string of free events and performances taking place in venues and on the streets.

The Birmingham Jazz and Blues Festival returns to Southside, an area in the ciy centre that includes Hurst Street, Bromsgrove Street and Ladywell Walk, between July 18 and 27.

A number of the Festival's top shows take place at the Arcadian Centre, including 6pm performances by Velke Losiny on July 19 and the Simon Spillett Quartet on July 26.



At Chung Ying Cantonese Restaurant in Wrottesley Street the New Orleans Hotshots can be seen at 7pm on July 19, while The Jazz Buddies perform there at 7pm on July 26.

CircusMASH will bring their skills and passion for circus entertainment to the Arcadian Centre in Hurst Street on Sunday August 24, with showcases of their 'Float' project taking place at 1.30pm and 5.30pm.



Following the success of last year's event, Southside will host Birmingham Hippodrome's Summer in Southside during the weekends of August. The free outdoor festival promises amazing theatre, dance, circus and music performances.

Julia Chance, Southside BID manager, says: "Southside is vibrant all year round but there's nowhere in Birmingham that's quite like Southside in the summer. We have some wonderfully talented performers visiting the district and, with many of these performances free to enjoy over July and August, there's no better place in the city when the sun is shining."
