Fairytale romance, penguins and even a touch of science is all part of the forthcoming season by Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB).



Latest productions for the remaining part of 2013 across the UK include Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and Penguin Cafe - featuring a trio of award-winning dances of Tombeaux, E=mc² and 'Still Life' at the Penguin Café.

Sleeping Beauty

A dreamy performance of one of the most popular fairytale ballets of all time sees BRB combine Tchaikovsky's score with original choreography by Marius Petipa.



The story follows Princess Aurora, who is cursed on her Christening Day by the wicked fairy Carabosse that one day the Princess will prick her finger on a spindle and die.

But the kind Lilac Fairy tempers the curse so the Princess will instead fall asleep for 100 years, and it is left to a handsome hero to wake our beauty from her slumber.

The Sleeping Beauty is considered one of the greatest ballets from Imperial Russia and this production is by BRB's former director Sir Peter Wright, creator of some of the Company's best-loved productions including The Nutcracker, Coppélia and Swan Lake. There is even a romantic finale packed with every fairytale character imaginable. Designs are by Philip Prowse and lighting by Mark Jonathan.

Penguin Cafe - Trio of dances: Tombeaux, E=mc² and 'Still Life' at the Penguin Café

This vibrant show features three of director David Bintley's most celebrated works, and children in particular will love the animals in the Penguin Cafe.



The first of the trio starts with a homage to classical ballet. Tombeaux draws the audience into a passionate and melancholic landscape. This is Bintley's lament on the death of his mentor, Frederick Ashton.

This is followed by the award-winning E=mc² - danced to a specially commissioned score by Australian composer Matthew Hindson. It explores Einstein's celebrated 'Special Theory of Relativity' in music and dance using breathtaking energy and speed.

It is then to a vivid finale that features a colourful array of endangered animals seeking shelter from the storm in 'Still Life' at the Penguin Café. The piece takes us into a world where humans and animals mingle, enjoy drinks and even have polite conversation.

It includes a morris-dancing flea, a ballroom-dancing ram, a woolly monkey and many more in a ballet that takes a witty and poignant look at man's effect on the world.

Royal Ballet Sinfonia at Birmingham Cathedral

The Royal Ballet Sinfonia and Birmingham Cathedral Choir perform some favourite classics in the intimate surroundings of Birmingham's St Philip's Cathedral, under the batons of Koen Kessels and Marcus Huxley.

This years programme includes Fauré's Requiem and Mahler's Symphony No.4.

This performance takes place in Birmingham Cathedral at 7.30pm on November 21, 2013.

The Nutcracker

Christmas would not feel the same without this enchanting festive ballet, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. A feast for the eyes for the whole family.



Sir Peter Wright's world-famous production, complete with sets and costumes by John Macfarlane, the designer of the Company's stunning Cinderella, performs in Birmingham this Christmas.

Watch young Clara, who after celebrating Christmas at a spectacular party, creeps downstairs at midnight to play with her new Nutcracker doll. There are more surprises in store for Clara as she is swept up in a fantasy of toy soldiers, giant rats, snow fairies, magic and mystery.

After saving her beloved Nutcracker from the King of the Rats, she is whisked away to an enchanted land and dances the night away in his arms, meeting a host of strange and exotic characters, before she is finally transformed into a beautiful ballerina.

The Nutcracker is performed at:
