Choral Concert On Contrasting Composers
Despite very diffferent lives, two of the world's most famous composers, Mendelssohn and Puccini, went on to create masterpieces that attracted similar acclaim.

These contrasting composers are the focus of the latest concert by Birmingham Festival Choral Society at The Ruddock Performing Arts Centre in King Edward's School, Edgbaston, on Saturday July 11 at 7.30pm.

Singers will perform Mendelssohn's Hymn of Praise (Lobgesang) and Puccini's Messa di Gloria during the night.

The very fact that the lives and music of these two great composers are so different is the very reason that BFCS has placed two of their great choral works on the same menu in its summer concert.

Patrick Larley, conductor for Birmingham Festival Choral Society, explained that Mendelssohn composed one opera at the age of 15, which was a complete flop, but his many works for choir and orchestra are among the finest in the choral repertoire.

Larley added: "In contrast, Puccini's fame and fortune lies solely in his magnificent operas, with one important exception - Messa di Gloria, composed as a graduation exercise at the age of 20.

"It shows all the exuberance, jaunty tunes and hints of the operatic style which brought about his later success, resulting in a masterpiece of choral writing. It has become a favourite with choirs throughout the world."

The works of both men display a mastery of flowing melody and beautiful harmony and will be performed by soloists Claire Watkins, Soprano; Gareth Dafydd Morris, Tenor; and Byron Jackson, Bass.

Tickets cost 14 adults and 12-7 concessions on the door or in advance from the Choral Society's website.

Cast includes:
Claire Watkins, Soprano,
Gareth Dafydd Morris, Tenor,
Byron Jackson, Bass.
Patrick Larley, conductor.
