This year’s Birmingham Fest will include comedy, thrillers, ghostly tales, dance, poetry, improv, drama, adult panto, Shakespeare and music by artists and companies from across the UK. The festival, between 10-28 July, features a host of performances taking place at The Blue Orange Theatre, The Crescent Theatre, The Old Joint Stock Theatre and the recently opened Birmingham Black Box.
Included in the programme is
Can’t Stop Carrying On, a one-man play about the
Carry On films,
The Hanged Man’s Bride, based on a ghost story by Charles Dickens, and an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s
The Murders in the Rue Morgue.
Local writers showcase four new short plays in
Another Day in the Life while Birmingham History Theatre celebrates Cadbury’s story through the eyes of four generations in
A Worker’s Paradise.
Birmingham’s Box of Frogs bring
An Evening of Improvisation and there’s more off-the-cuff comedy when Foghorn Unscripted’s
An Improvised Murder invites the audience to decide how a killing has happened. Red Patch Productions brings two contemporary dance pieces in
The Trying Rooms and Vivi Bayliss and Ella Godfrey celebrate the beauty of failure in their dance performance
Re-Turn.
And there are plenty more shows to choose from. Festival organiser Darren Haywood says:
“There is a fantastic range of shows that cover all areas of the performing arts. There is also a large selection of brand-new work and writing. Hopefully, there will be something for everyone.
“The festival is great for the city’s arts scene. As well as having such an eclectic programme of performances it will introduce companies and patrons to some of the city’s venues that they may not be familiar with. Some artists and companies use this festival as a taster before going up to Edinburgh. Birmingham Fest provides a ‘fringe element to the city’s theatre scene.”
