As part of the First World War Centenary, Sebastian Faulks' Birdsong will be brought to life on stage at NST Campus with a production by Birdsong Productions LTD and Original Theatre. The World War I tale transforms the stage into the trenches as it weaves a tale of love, war and family. The show will run from April 17th till April 21st and tickets can be purchased online from the NST website.
Birdsong tells the story of Englishman, Stephen Wraysford, who falls in love with an enchanting Frenchwoman, Isabelle Azaire. They have a passionate affair that is cut short when war breaks out. The play is transported from the world of their romance to the trenches where Stephen leads his men through the Somme's underground warfare. The memory of Isabelle lingers as Stephen is brought face to face with the horrors of war.
The stage show is a stunning example of theatre, with mesmerising sets and powerful effects that are only heightened by the performances of the cast. The story is heartbreaking and the final year of the World War I centenary, which has been ongoing since 2014, seems the perfect time for this UK tour.
Tickets start at just £10, and prices vary depending on dates and seats. You can book tickets on the NST website or by calling the box office on 023 8067 1771. On Thursday April 19th there will be a post-show Q&A, but book quick if you're wanting to catch it as these performances tend to sell out first.
A special performance on Saturday 21st April will be both audio described and BSL signed. This provides an opportunity for theatregoers with hearing or vision impairments to enjoy the show. All performances also have wheelchair accessibility and options for hearing enhancements. All wheelchair and disability bookings should contact the box office for availabilities.
As well as Southampton, Birdsong will be touring throughout the UK in 2018. For tour dates, visit the Birdsong tour website.
