Birdies restaurant is in Harbour Street in Whitstable located right in the heart of town. It's a French restaurant with great chefs who use local ingredients. Owned and run by a family, this place has a relaxed atmosphere.
Lovely local French restaurant
The current owners of Birdies have been there since 1993. A husband and wife team, they are chefs with a passion for French cuisine. The menu changes with the seasons and the availability of produce. You won't find a printed list of dishes on the tables - you have to check the chalkboards for what's available.
It's an intimate restaurant with 8 to 10 tables inside and 2 tables outside. The staff are very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. They will happily talk you through the dishes on the menu. Mussels with white wine and garlic are my favourite when it's available. There are often crab dishes and lobster on the menu with a choice of different fish but also beef and chicken dishes too.
When it comes to dessert they have a selection of 4 or 5 puddings and a cheese platter.
Review of Birdies Restaurant on Whitstable
Birdies is a lovely place to eat. It's the sort of place to book for a birthday or anniversary. It's not stuffy at all and the staff are chatty and friendly. The food is really tasty and the service is perfect. You have to book most days for lunch or an evening meal as there aren't many tables.
There isn't any air-conditioning in the restaurant which is Birdies only downfall. When the weather is warm, the temperature inside rises quickly. The ceiling fans offer some relief, but there is simply no airflow in the building. If you struggle with the heat, choose a cooler day to visit so you enjoy the lovely atmosphere in comfort.
