A lot of us have bikes but many never see the light of day.
They're often pushed to the back of the garage, left to languish under a blanket of cobwebs, with flat tyres and broken lights, looking rather sorry for themselves.
Instead we jump in the car because it's easier, it's more convenient, and it's quicker.
But with the rapidly rising cost of petrol and our growing awareness of the environment and its tribulations, maybe it's time for a rethink.
In June,
Team Green Britain , a movement trying to do its bit in the battle against climate change, is organising a nine-day nationwide celebration of cycling.
So what better time to dust off those cobwebs, pump up those tyres and fix those lights? Or alternatively, just buy a new bike....
Team Green Britain
Bike Week , pushing off on 18th June, involves special cycling events up and down the country. Last year more than half a million got involved, and this year the organisers are keen to surpass that impressive number.
A number of events are taking place in and around the capital. Here are a couple of them to give you an idea:
- Stratford on 18 June –
starts at 10.30am outside Stratford train station . Classed as an easy ride for adults, it should be a leisurely affair, mostly off-road, suitable for all kinds of bicycles (although unicyclists might find it hard going). No reservation required so you can just tootle along on the day. Estimated finish time: about 3pm, back at Stratford station.
- Richmond on 25th June – this event, called
Bike Across Cultures , aims to get everyone from Richmond, Kingston and beyond out on their bikes and getting to know each other. Promoting racial harmony, the event starts at 11am at the Kingston Gate of Richmond Park and will likely finish at around 3pm. This one is also free and open to those under 16. Not owning a bike is no excuse for missing the event – they'll lend you one if you get there early.
Bike Week involves events that'll suit all types of cyclists – young and old; families; those who have never even felt a saddle between their legs; those who certainly have; groups from companies and schools. Search
the database to find an event ideal for you.
As we all know, cycling is much more environmentally friendly, and gets you fit at the same time.
You don't have to give up your car, but you might want to just try getting on your bike and working those muscles again. Your body will thank you for it.
