Free bicycle checks are on offer as part of a week to encourage cyclists to get on their bike in Birmingham.

Families are being encouraged to get on their bike

A Bike Week launch event takes place at The Parade in the Birmingham suburb of Sutton Coldfield on June 14.

From midday to 4pm on the day, mechanics and bike enthusiasts will give useful advice and offer tips that encourage locals to cycle more often.

They will be based outside the BHS store in the heart of Sutton Coldfield.

Bike North Birmingham is behind the event as it aims to boost the profile of cycling across Erdington and Sutton Coldfield over the next four years.

A spokesman for Bike North Birmingham says "The project aims to get more people cycling more often, with fun, healthy and sustainable cycling activities planned for workplaces, schools, stations and local communities.

"By increasing the amount of cycling in the area Bike North Birmingham will help to improve the environment, the local economy and the health and fitness of local people.

"For Bike week. There'll be loads going on and best of all it's all completely free!"

During the event, families will be able to get Dr Bike MOTs and security marking for their bicycles. They will also be able to sign up for rides in Sutton Park or along Newhall Valley.

There will even be a bike-powered smoothie-maker creating refreshments, plus maps and other information for keen cyclists to take away with them.
