Yes the name is weird and it's fun to say, but Bi Bim Bap is actually a seriously good (and cheap) place to eat. So much so that it has become an office favourite - and we are those fussy health-conscious media types! The food is so satisfying that the smiling faces of happy Bi Bim Bap's customers plaster the walls as decoration.
Bi Bim Bap is a delicious and nutritious Korean dish served in a sizzling hot stone bowl. Watch your fingers as these things can burn. There are 10 varieties to choose from - each with a base of rice. These include a couple of vegetarian options as well as beef, pork, spicy chicken and seafood, each with vegetables.
When ordering don't forget to specify if you want an egg on top. The egg will normally come fried but we always ask for it raw. The bowls are so hot they cook the egg anyway since the idea is to mix everything up with your chop sticks. The result is warming, satisfying and yummy. You can also spice or sweeten it up with the table sauces as you wish.
In addition to the bi bim bap, you can try salads, noodle dishes and side dishes. We've tried the dumplings, kimchi, seafood pancakes and chilli squid - all were great.
A special occasion place this ain't. But it's a wonderful lunch place and perfect to line your tummy before a night out in Soho. Or you could use it as I did - as a neutral non-suggestive place to meet your ex boyfriend for a "just friends" catch up. Believe me, the only thing that got hot was the bowl!
