I'm discovering Southampton along with you!

Living along the coast, the warmer months are arguably an easier time to find fun things to do, but that doesn't mean that winter needs to be dull. We're after the best ideas for activities that keep you entertained, but still warm, during the colder months of the year. We've got a few suggestions of our own, but we want to hear your suggestions and opinions.

Unfortunately temperatures don't usually get cold enough that our natural lakes can be turned into skate rinks, but ice skating is still possible in the winter. For November to January Westquay gets its own purpose built ice skating rink that's perfect for families, couples, or even a bit of solo skating. To add to the winter wonderland they throw in a log cabin themed bar serving hot chocolates and snacks, and a few sneaky shots during the evening. Unfortunately it's a pretty short season, so you've got to get in early.

Just as active, but a bit more 'outdoorsy', is the option of exploring New Forest in the winter. The forest changes in the winter, and you'll be able to see things in a different light. Sure you're less likely to come across fields of wildflowers, but winter has a particular kind of beauty that some really enjoy.

If you're more keen on staying indoors, then perhaps the theatre is more your scene. You'll keep warm no matter what you see, but a classic activity through the festive season is catching a Christmas pantomime. You can usually find something on well into January, whether you're looking at the bigger theatres like the Mayflower Theatre or checking out a smaller community show. Or maybe instead you're more keen on a warm pub meal and a roaring fire?

To keep out of the cold you might like browsing through art galleries or soaking up the history of the Tudor House & Garden, but maybe you've got some other suggestions that make the perfect winter entertainment. Unfortunately you're not likely to be building snowmen and having snowball fights in the middle of Southampton Common, but winter can still be filled with lots of fun. Let us know your favourite winter activities and join in the discussion.
