10 Best London Kids 1/2 Term Workshops


1. Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) , 66 Portland PlaceAll sessions have been inspired by the exhibition 'Ordinary Beauty: The Photography of Edwin Smith' and are led by professional educators. Workshops take place between Monday 27 and Friday 31 October 2014 and booking is essential. £30 per workshop (£20 – eligible for free school lunch).

Family Fun events take place on Friday 31 October, £2 per child / £8 per family and paid on the door. Please notes that the workshops are for Ages 7-18.

2. keyword...&eventType=Event&eventKeyword=Family&eventsSubmit.x=38&eventsSubmit.y=10 The National Gallery ,Trafalgar SquareJoin one of the daily Family Drop In Workshops that start on 27 October and run throughout half term : The workshops subjects will be ranging from clay, puppetry, painting, and drawing.

A free ticket is required for entry and they are available one hour before the event on a first come, first served basis. Places are limited to 20 tickets per session for children, (plus an accompanying adult). For ages 5

3. The Geffreye, Museum of the Home ,ShoreditchJoin the museum as they celebrate their anniversary year with a wide range of daily activities. Bake special treats, create party-ware and make decorations. There is a fantastic selection of workshops for all ages, and for those needing to gain inspiration take your sketch book and hang out in their beautiful gardens.

Sessions start on Tuesday 28 – Friday 31 October, 10.30am – 12.30pm and 2 – 4pm.

4. Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum , South Kensington**'Make it' Painting workshops are brilliantly run at our favourite V&A. In these family events you can work with a landscape painter to recreate details from some of Constable's famous paintings. Why not Imagine you're on Hampstead Heath, sketching kids and kites, wild herbs and willow branches.

Held daily during 1/2 term : Times are 10.30–12.30 & 14.30–16.30 : Recommended for ages 5-12 : £7.50 per child, children must be accompanied by an adult.

5. British Film Institute (BFI) , SouthbankDuring the October Half-term the BFI are hosting screen writing, and film making workshops that are inspired by the Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder season. The workshops start on 27 October, and booking is essential.

6. The Cartoon Museum , BloomsburyJoin the great sessions with illustrators and publishers. The Write & Draw Your Own Comics! workshop is on Sunday 26 October, at 2pm & 3pm, and there are many others. Booking essential.

Make a note as on the second Saturday of the month (between 12-4pm), you can always drop into the Cartoon Museum for family cartooning activities, with the resident cartoonist.

7. Saatchi Gallery , Kings Road, ChelseaThis half term will be the last chance to see the exhibition 'Pangaea: New Art From Africa and Latin America' exhibition before it closes on 2nd November. Manga expert Samuele Falzone will be running his popular master class in creating Manga drawings. Participants will learn about the history of Japanese comics before developing their own characters and storyboards.

Also hot of the Saatchi Press the education team are hosting a new animation workshop led by professional illustrator and animator Helen Piercy (whose book 'Animation Studio' is stocked in the bookshop!). There is also a Free Family day on Tuesday 28th workshop full of Graffiti, collage, printing and painting.

8. The Queens House (Royal Museums Greenwich) Greenwich The Queens House is hosting a Halloween Spooktacular Family Fun Day on 31 Oct from 11-4pm. Be sure to dress in your scariest fancy dress to a Halloween party.

Activities will be drop in, so you can choose to make a pom-pom creepy-crawly, create and animate your own ghost story, and enjoy storytelling about mysterious happenings in the night sky. You must have your photo taken at the dress-up family photo booth; play super-sized board game Spooks and Shudders; and show off your monster moves during the Halloween disco.

Parade your outfit at the end of the day in our creepiest costume competition. You may even bump into the resident ghost… There are heaps of activities included in your ticket which when you break it down, for a whole day of heart jumping fun, is bloody good value(!).

9. The Royal Society , Victoria

As part of The Big Draw Event which is the worlds largest drawing festival don't you know, the RS are hosting a free Art and Science Family Day on 25 October.

The day will include a programme of talks and workshops. Children can try their hand at making their own pop-up book or having a dinosaur named after them, and adults can explore the visual culture of science or learn about dynamic collaborations in art and science.

Whilst there you will be able to see and draw historical artefacts and scientific illustrations pulled from the Royal Society's archives, as well as the extraordinary architecture of their Carlton House Terrace building.

10. National Theatre , Southbank

Fantastic Family Events are being held at The NT Clore Learning Centre, this 1/2 term. The next Family Day will be held on 1 November 2014.

If you go to see the show, you can also book various workshops which are inspired by the production of 'Romeo and Juliet' which will be performing at the NT from 29 Oct - 14 Nov (note between 29–31 October they are running daytime performances).

Don't miss the chance of learning how to stage fight, or create your own family tag in their graffiti workshops. How about you go method, and call yourself a Montague for the day, Juliet would approve!
