Taste of the Orient in Lewisham

Bento Restaurant specialises in oriental food and Japanese cuisine. The menu is varied and very reasonably priced and the interior of the restaurant is clean and nicely set out. I particularly liked sitting next to the fish tank.

The first time I visited Bento, I got the 'healthy apple juice' to drink and it came out quickly. The juice had that delicious Granny Smith apple tang.

Over two visits, we've now sampled a few things from the menu.
The spare ribs as a starter were tasty with a nice sticky sauce.

The vegetable fried rice was a good accompaniment to the other dishes we ordered.

We also tried the chicken cashew nuts, which was more in a Chinese style than the Thai style that I prefer, with a thicker sauce and a slight sweetness rather than a spicy finish.

The two noodle dishes we sampled were a good base but perhaps a little lacking in substantial flavour to be eaten as mains. We ordered the vegetarian pad Thai.

The other noodles we ordered were very plain and really were probably meant to complement another dish.

Overall, I think that I'm yet to find the best items on the menu here, but I am encouraged to visit again and try. The service on each visit has been lovely, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the prawn crackers are delicious.
