Balham Farmers' Market

A farmers' market is the perfect way to get your hands on the freshest produce at the best prices.

On top of that, you're purchasing it direct from the grower, so if you've got any questions about what you're buying, the people in the know are standing right in front of you.

In recent years, farmers' markets have become more numerous in London, their popularity driven by consumers' weariness of impersonal chain supermarkets.

The new kid on the London farmers' market block is Balham, which began doing business in September 2011.

The Balham Farmers' Market takes place at Chestnut Grove School - that's right, in a school playground - so take the kids along and make a morning of it.

As the market straddles lunchtime, the organisers have wisely made available a range of snacks, so you can grab lunch while you're rummaging through the fresh fruit and veg.

Other produce available at the market includes: beef, lamb, pork, poultry, game, cheese and dairy, garden plants and cut flowers, drinks, fish, jams, breads, cakes, eggs, and cooked local foods.

Around 35 vendors will be in attendance each week, including, for examaple, Wild Country Organics, Rosie's Garden Plants, Seriously Italian, Manor Farm Shop, Alham Wood Cheeses, Bath Soft Cheese Company, and Fiveways Fruit Farm. My word, I'm drooling over the keyboard just typing that list.

Don't forget that when you shop at a farmers' market, you're doing something great - supporting local farmers and growers, and helping small local businesses to thrive. If you've never been to one, how about making the new farmers' market in Balham your first?
