This ancient healing technique from India aims at holistic health and well-being and has been loved by the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore and Gwyneth Paltrow. Ayurveda, is one of the oldest systems of natural health care, originating from the ancient traditions of India. It dates back to more than 5,000 years ago and can provide lasting relief for all sorts of illnesses ranging from common cold to arthritis. A key element of this ancient therapy is to promote happiness in every step. Happiness, after all is the key to sound health.
If you fancy a little bit of India and this holistic treatment, then head to Reading, Berkshire. Ayurveda Retreat located at the Reading town centre is one-of-its-kind retreat in UK that is keeping the traditions of this school of therapy alive. Draped curtains, gold chandelier star, candle lights and a sweeping sense of calm welcomes you as you enter this place. It is an inviting start indicating the tranquillity that awaits you.
There are a plethora of bespoke treatments comprising consultation, massage, diet and yoga. But if you are pressed for time, you can always opt for a nice, relaxing massage which is again tailor-made for you. The spa at Ayurveda Retreat has several types of massages to choose from—there is Abhyanga or relaxing full body massage, Vishesh, an invigorating deep tissue massage, Udvartana or cellulite busting massage, Pindaseva or Poultice De-Stress massage plus many others.
My pick is the Udvartana massage, a unique body treatment with a therapeutic oil and herbal powder that is vigorously worked on the body. It not only reduces subcutaneous fat from the body and tones it up but also revitalises the skin.
An excellent de-stressing massage, the treatment starts with a relaxing head and face massage. You then climb up on a wooden bed (Droni) where the therapist steadily strokes you with herbal paste. This paste opens the pores, removes blockages from the vessels, increase the heat in tissues and goes deep inside to stimulate fat burn.
You are then made to sit in an herbal steam chamber with your head jutting out. The steam removes the built-up toxins, opens the pores and induces further fat burning. But it is not just your body which feels the benefits; at this retreat with each stroke from the therapist you feel a sense of calm encompassing you.
Before you know it, you've entered a state of Zen and it is an experience you will remember for a long time.
