When I was in town yesterday, I saw a sign outside the library saying 'exhibition open'. It gave no clue as to what the exhibition was, but intrigued, I went inside to have a look.

On the first floor, a lady was painting a family of badgers in watercolour, while around the rest of the room was a gallery of paintings, and some wood work.

The wood work included beautifully crafted bowls by Ray Spanswick, who also had on display clocks, cork stoppers, curtain pulleys, and other ornaments including carved pears.

The paintings were by Cynthia Hatcher (the woman painting the badgers), who specialises in watercolour and acrylics. She took up painting after early retirement, and has sold her work to clients such as the Mayor of Hammersmith, Fulham, and Merton.

She is very good at animal expressions, - not herself, but in her paintings - there was this one painting of a pig that had such a pleased look on its face that I couldn't help but smile. All her work was on sale at very reasonable prices, and she said that if there was nothing that captured your fancy, then she was happy to do commissions. She also sold prints of her work on cards, of which I bought several.

She is only there until Saturday 10th of November, but the library is holding a second art exhibition from the 19th-24th November.

On Monday, the exhibition will be open between 2pm-8.30pm, Tuesday to Friday, you can visit between 10am-6.30pm, and on the Saturday, it will remain open until 4pm. Admission is free.
