I didn't intend to go into Appetite Kitchen and Deli, as I wandered aimlessly up Howe St. on the lookout for lunch. I was lured in by the offer of free cheese and oatcakes on their little table outside. Once inside, I stayed because of the friendly staff and delicious smells wafting out from the kitchen.



They were very patient while my two girls took a very long time to pick their lunch from the wide selection. They also let them try a little spoonful of beef curry to check whether they liked it. Although the children weren't sure, I had a little taste. It was delicately spiced and quite delicious. In the end, they decided to go for a toasted tuna, sweetcorn and cheese focaccia. It was very tasty, and I've been back on my lunch break to get it again since.

The deli has everything you would expect: French cheese, locally sourced produce, some tasty looking ham. There are also chutneys, jams, oatcakes, vinegars, teas and many more. I like the artisan bread, and I am always pleased when I spot a shop selling unsprayed raspberries and strawberries.



Although it's not a café, there is a large picnic bench outside. If it's a fine day you'll be able sit down and eat your lunch while you watch the fashionable residents of the New Town make their way down Howe St. into Stockbridge. If it's not, then take your goodies home and enjoy them at your leisure. They also do external catering for events. You can find a sample dinner menu here . Their list of partner venues is very impressive and includes some of Edinburgh's most prestigious locations.

I will definitely go back to Appetite Kitchen and Deli, not just because of the food, but because the open, friendly, and helpful staff made the Deli stand out as a very special little place.
