Smethwick isn't one of Birmingham's most popular destinations to visit, it certainly won't be on your 'to-do' list for attractions, but this small town is actually riddled with cheap and cheerful hair and beauty salons.

For those keen on preening and perfecting, sculpting and smoothing their post-Christmas bodies Smethwick is the place you need to be, more specifically Cape Hill where you will find the brilliant beauty salon: Anjali's.

Owner Anjali is a lovely woman - mild mannered, kind, and surprisingly frank. Once when I was wincing through my second bikini wax she suggested I have laser treatment, and have my boyfriend pay for it. I laughed and she said: "well, it's him you do it for". I didn't expect that!

They offer a great range of salon procedures including the following:

Waxing
Threading
Laser treatments
Body sculpting treatments
Bridal make up

Anjali is the best waxer in the salon, once you've had her she won't let you be treated by another therapist, unless of course you don't mind.

They are quick, efficient, and a wax takes no more than ten minutes.

I strongly recommend Anjali's for their waxing. They even do a full body wax, which includes full leg, bikini, back, full arm, chin and face (!) My sister had this done for her wedding (minus the back, chin and face) and she was equally impressed by the service. She has never had a bikini wax and was surprised at how gentle they were with her. For speed, two therapists began on each leg, then her bikini area, arms and under-arms, and she was 'done' in just over half an hour! All to look good on her wedding day ... sigh.

Eyebrow threading - they are famous for this. I have been a loyal customer since my untamed brows turned into face framing features - even throughout my time at University which is 90 miles from Birmingham.

Some of us are hairier than other, but discretion is what Anjali's specialise in; it is a women's only salon, and I have never been made to feel uncomfortable. I must admit, however, with my first bikini wax I was nervous, and squeamish, but Anjali just kept chatting away calmly, and I was soon giggling my anxiety off.

Once you've had a treatment, of any kind at Anjali's, you will walk out with your head held high. You might feel inclined to whip off your trousers and show the world your fuzz-free legs, or stop the next person you see and ask them to inspect your beautiful new brows, I did. Oddly enough, the man in the newsagents next door wasn't too impressed...
