If you find yourself in Cheam, or more specifically Cheam Village, pop along to the tiny and tucked away diner, American Way. This restaurant has been alive and kicking for over 30 years serving great diner-style meals, shakes and desserts.
Opening in the seventies, the American style eaterie is popular with locals and tourists alike. They have recently changed owenership which saw the decor being updated to give it even more of retro feel, but the food remains the same.
The seats are red leather, with one family leather booth at the back. There are vintage style relics and pictures and a mint green bar where the food is prepared. The atmosphere is friendly and busy. It is only small with about 5 tables and one booth so if you really want to eat here you may have to phone in advance. If there are two of you, you can usually wait at the bar for a table. You can order takeaway too.
Expect variations on burgers and chips, or salads. The highlight for me is the milkshakes- they have over 30 flavours and offer alcoholic versions too. All meat is freshly prepared on a grill.
The prices are reasonable too- around £6 for a burger, salad and chips, and £3 for a milkshake in a retro style silver serving jug. Great for families, dates, or just grabbing a quick bite.
