A new pantomime is coming to Tamworth in Staffordshire, with the town's Mayor taking on a role he should be all too familiar with. The Mayor of Tamworth, Councillor Richard Kingstone, will be joining the cast of which is being staged by Tamworth Pantomime Company later this month. The popular panto is being performed at Tamworth Assembly Rooms between January 18 and January 26. Richard will take on a starring role in several of the performances of as The Mayor of Old Peking - with a Tamworth twist. Richard is no stranger to the stage as he previously used to perform as a children's entertainer and magician before he became a school teacher. But his appearances in are likely to prove a little nervy as he hasn't performed for more than 20 years.

Richard said: "You get so many unique opportunities as Mayor and you just have to grab them with both hands, so when this opportunity presented itself, I just had to say yes. Although it's been a long time since I performed, I'm really looking forward to it. Audiences can expect to see me in the thick of the action at the Emperor's Palace (Town Hall) and in one of the most well-known panto scenes ever. It's great light-hearted family fun and I would really encourage people to come along and see the show." Alex Farrell, of Tamworth Pantomime Company, added: "We are so pleased that the Mayor of Tamworth has taken up our invitation to take part in ! We were really pleased to see that Richard is a natural actor, even if he is playing a heightened version of himself, and really cracks us up in rehearsals! He plays The Mayor of Old Peking, but there are certainly plenty of mentions of Tamworth. So come along and see Councillor Kingstone in pantomime action - hopefully he won't have a night-mayor!"

Tickets for the panto are priced at £15 adults, £10 concessions and £45 for a family. They are available online at www.tamworthassemblyrooms.co.uk or www.TamworthPanto.co.uk, from the Box Office on 01827 709618, or in person from Tamworth Information Centre in Marmion House, Monday to Friday and at Tamworth Castle on Saturdays.
