One of the stalwarts of the 1960s folk scene is making a welcome return to the UK. Scottish-born singer-songwriter
Al Stewart has not been back to these shores since 2019 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. But he will be returning this autumn with his band, The Empty Pockets, plus saxophonist Marc Macisso, for a nostalgic look back at his illustrious career. Al, who will perform at
Birmingham Town Hall on October 18, will be delighting fans with many of his old favourites including 'Year of the Cat', 'Time Passages', 'On the Border', 'Nostradamus' and 'Roads to Moscow', along with selections from his deep and impressive catalogue. Al has released nearly 20 introspective and lyrically powerful records which have featured a variety of brilliant backing musicians ranging from Jimmy Page and Phil Collins to Richard Thompson and Tori Amos.
He rose to prominence as part of the British folk revival in the 1960s and 1970s, developing a unique and intimate style of playing. His debut album,
Bedsitter Images, was released in 1967, to be followed two years later by Love Chronicles, featuring Jimmy Page and Richard Thompson on guitar, which was notable for the 18-minute title track. Al is best known for his 1976 hit single 'Year of the Cat,' from the platinum album of the same name. He then followed that success with a second platinum-selling album,
Time Passages, in 1978. All told, Al has achieved several top 20 singles, with other successes including 'On the Border' and 'Song on the Radio'.
Al himself says: "
I'm just a folk singer that is interested in history and wine that got lucky with some hit records! It's as simple as that really. I was always a huge music fan and, originally, I had wanted to be Brian Jones and then Bob Dylan, but those two jobs were already taken. And in many ways, I'm still pretty much the same troubadour that I was back in 1965. I still get a kick out of hearing the Zombies, Hendrix or They Might be Giants on the radio."
Al Stewart will be at Birmingham Town Hall on October 18 from 7.30pm with tickets priced at £45.50. For more information, visit:
