The coolest, most earth-loving Mela in town! It's described as a 'cultural celebration and night of fun'.
Alexander Social Club in Ashton-under-Lyne will be hosting this cool event on the eve of Friday, 7th of June. From half six until half ten, expect a whirlwing of free-love, and lose the stereotypes because a mela is much cooler than that. The word 'mela' is a Sanskrit word meaning 'gathering' or 'to meet' or a Fair. It is used in the Indian subcontinent for all sizes, and thus is applied here.
On the approaching magical evening the social club will feature a storyteller (ooh), Indian Bhajans (aah), a dancer and there will be a vegan meal provided, vegetarians stalls and displays, and vegan tasters.
Organised by those behind the ashram fund an evening of fun, spirituality, and free spirited love this promises to be.
It sounds like a cool buddhism-inspired event. But if the line up doesn't intrigue you this might: someone on the night will win a flight to India to take part in the true Ahimsa Mela. As the organisers put it:
"One lucky ticket holder will win a ticket to South India with Emirates airline. The flight will be to Chennai and then transport can be arranged to go to Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. We will provide you with a guide from the airport if you wish who will also translate for you if needed. When you arrive at Tiruvannamalai and have freshened up. You can go for a swim at Sprsa hotel or have your lunch at one of India's very few eco hotels with friendly staff and wonderful decor and gardens. You will be able to visit Ramana Maharishis ashram, visit one of India's biggest Shiva Temples, walk around Arunachala mountain on full moon day with thousands of pilgrims, visit Arunachala Animal sanctuary for the afternoon, take a bus ride to Ponducherry and the beach. Aurobindo's Ashram and much more."

If you've got the travel bug, and have yet to visit India this really is a once in a life time opportunity. You can buy tickets for this event here, and be in with a chance of winning. Otherwise head to the Alexander Social Club and soak up the atmosphere with other animal-lovers, health-conscious peeps, and (possible) tree huggers. Or just hug each other ...
