There have been many great fictional detectives over the years, from the likes of Sherlock Holmes right through to TV favourites such as Vera and Inspector Morse, But audiences around the country will now be able to see the other side of the crime-fighting sleuth in the capable hands of Shoddy Theatre. The theatrical company formed less than a decade ago, has produced a slapstick comedy called A Shoddy Detective and The Art Of Deception, which is shortly to embark on a UK tour.

Presented by Shoddy Theatre, Joshua Beaumont and Matthew Emeny, the play is taking to the road from April 2025 following its hit run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The tour starts in Colchester on 29 April and travels around the country until the beginning of July, including a date at the Lichfield Garrick Theatre in Staffordshire on 27 May.

Can the 'Shoddy Detective' solve the crime

Described as “witty, endearing and good clean fun”, A Shoddy Detective and The Art Of Deception follows a bumbling detective as he is called upon to uncover the mystery of a priceless stolen painting. But when he cannot solve it himself, he is forced to enlist the help of an old nemesis. Together, the pair must interrogate the many characterful suspects that reside at the manor house in order to catch the conniving culprit and solve the crime of the century.

Shoddy Theatre is a UK-based comedy group, founded in 2018 by a number of drama students. Their first production was such a hit that it was awarded funding from Essex University to become an established theatrical production company. Since then, spearheaded by Mitch Donaldson, Shoddy has gone from strength to strength and their new partnership with Joshua Beaumont and Matthew Emeny will see their largest tour yet with the promise of lots more to come in the future.

The comedy is embarking on a UK tour from April
