During a recent stay in York I decide to skip the predictable breakfast you get in a hotel and venture into the warren of streets running through York to try somewhere different.

Tucked down a narrow cobbled street not far from the famous York Minster I found 1331. The restaurant is spread over several floors giving it a cosy feel. We passed the bar and headed upstairs to the restaurant. My husband and I were quickly greeted by happy barstaff and a table was set up for us and our friends that we were meeting. Unlike many places which don't open for breakfast until it's almost lunchtime, 1331 opens it's doors at 8am.

I was pleased to see lots of choices on the breakfast menu from simple toast to eggs benedict or the full works. I decided to go for the vegetarian breakfast with my egg poached. Getting a poached egg perfect can be tricky especially with a large order. As I slipped my knife into the egg, the yolk ran out and oozed over the plate, just the way I like it. Tea was complimentary with my breakfast order but I did feel a pang of jealousy as my friend's hot chocolate arrived. Piled high with cream and abundant marshmallows, it was definitely a Sunday morning treat.

There's also a terrace outside which would make a lovely spot to eat when the weather is a little warmer.

If you're looking for brunch with friends after a big night out then try out 1331.
